Tens of thousands of pilgrims from all over Ethiopia celebrated Genna, or Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas on Friday at the 12th century monolithic rock hewn churches of Lalibela.

Lalibela is an UNESCO World Heritage listed site in the Amhara region bordering the war-torn Tigray region.

Ethiopian Orthodox Christians abstain from meat, fish and dairy products for the 40 days leading up to Genna
