Some satellite images and communications from the Tonga islands are now available after an undersea volcano erupted, impacting the 170 island kingdom.

The eruption sent a huge mushroom cloud of smoke and ash across the islands, and nearly 50-foot tsunami waves crashed ashore.

The Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano eruption damaged an underwater fiber optic cable, cutting off the island's communication, according to the government.

Damage assessment is underway, and government officials say they haven’t been able to gain communication with at least one island, Niuas.

Officials have also confirmed at least three deaths, two people are missing and several have been injured.

While the Tonga kingdom is made up of 170 islands, many of them are uninhabited or sparsely inhabited.

Officials are working to distribute water and food to those affected.
