73 Confederate monuments were removed or renamed in 2021, according to a report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) on Tuesday.

Some civil rights activists and historians say these statues were symbols of racism in the U.S. since the Civil War.

723 Confederate monuments still stand in the U.S. and its territory, the SPLC reported. There are also 741 roadways, 201 schools, 51 buildings, 38 parks and 22 holidays in the U.S. honoring the Confederacy.

The death of George Floyd in 2020 has sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and racism in the U.S. It also pushed to remove 157 Confederate memorials, the most removals in one year.
