Mourners lined the streets of Mumbai for the funeral procession of iconic Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, other politicians, and Bollywood stars paid their final respects to the 92-year-old singer who died on Sunday, February 6. India declared two days of national mourning and lowered the country’s flags to fly at half-staff.
Lata Mangeshkar was beloved by multiple generations. Her voice, which could often be heard in classic Bollywood musical films, made her an iconic figure in music, not just in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, but even in some Western countries. She is estimated to have recorded thousands of songs in more than 30 languages over a career that spanned decades.
In addition to her singing, Mangeshkar was known as an activist within Bollywood's music industry, fighting hard for Indian singers's rights to fair pay and to royalties from their recordings.
Lata Mangeshkar died from multiple organ failures after a month of being hospitalized due to COVID-19.
