Schools and colleges are still shut down in Karnataka state in southern India after protests over hijab wearing led to violence. The demonstrations started after six teenage students at a high school said they were barred from classes because they chose to wear the head covering.

The school said they had asked the students to remove the hijab in class, but that they were still permitted to wear them on campus. The state's high court has requested the chief justice to set up a larger court to discuss the matter. The court is hearing two petitions on behalf of some of the Muslim women. Nobel Prize-winner Malala Yousafzai has called on India to "stop the marginalisation of Muslim women".
