Voters in the northern Indian state of Punjab have cast their ballots in state assembly elections. 

Punjab state is an important region of India for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP party ahead of general elections in 2024. 

The results depend on the majority of Sikh farmers who led more than a year-long protest over the repeal of contentious farm laws.
