A winter storm is dropping heavy snow and ice in the U.S. northeast, causing school closures and flight cancellations.

Some places could see up to 12 inches of snow, with extra ice, NOAA's Weather Prediction Center reported.

Millions are under weather alerts across the region and officials are warning people to avoid driving if they can.

The storm is expected to make its way out early Friday evening.
