Catholics around the world, including U.S. President Joe Biden are observing Ash Wednesday.

On this day, practicing Catholics receive an ash cross on their foreheads by a priest or minister.

It's a symbol acknowledging sin and represents someone’s grief and mourning of their sins.

Ash Wednesday also marks the start of Lent, a period of fast that leads up to Easter, the day Catholics believe Jesus was resurrected.
