China’s senior diplomat Yang Jiechi and U.S. national security advisor Jake Sullivan had a “candid, in-depth and constructive” talk in Rome, Italy.

Yang said the most important task for the two countries now is to implement the consensus reached between Chinese President Xi and U.S. President Biden in their virtual summit last November.

On Monday’s meeting in Rome, Yang and Sullivan agreed to implement the consensus between two heads of states, manage their differences, expand consensus, and strengthen cooperation, to promote the importance of China-U.S. relations, in a bid to bring China-U.S. relations back on track.

Yang also stressed once again China’s stances over its internal issues such as Taiwan, Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong, and urged the U.S. to stop interfering in its internal affairs.

Yang and Sullivan had also exchanged views on Ukraine, the DPRK, Iran and Afghanistan, according to China’s foreign ministry.

In November's conversation, Xi said to Biden that the two nations should stick to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.

Biden responded positively and made important commitments such as not seeking a new Cold War, not seeking to change China’s political system, not seeking to oppose China by strengthening alliances, not supporting “Taiwan independence”, and having no intention of confronting China.
