China is concerned about the situation in occupied Palestinian territory and the violence between Palestine and Israel, said Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun.

While speaking at the United Nations Security Council briefing on the situation in the Middle East, Ambassador Zhang stressed the importance of protecting children in conflict settings.

"The protection of children in conflict settings is not an empty slogan, but an unshakable moral responsibility and an international obligation that must be fulfilled," he said.

China is also calling for a thorough investigation of recent violence and effective accountability. And as holidays for both Muslims and Jews approach, Ambassador Zhang is encouraging both sides to refrain from inciting violence.

"We support Palestinian-Israeli coordination on economic and civilian matters, and call on Israel to lift the blockade of Gaza as soon as possible. China has always been caring about the well-being of the Palestinian people," said Ambassador Zhang.

He added, the question of Palestine requires a long term solution on the basis of the two-state solution.

China is also calling on the international community to work more toward advancing the Middle East peace process.
