Peru has declared a state of emergency for one month, allowing the armed forces to supervise highways as the government works to quell nationwide protests over rising fuel and fertilizer costs due to international sanctions on Russia.
Protesters blocked the Pan-American highway this week, one of the key highways essential for food and supplies in Peru’s largest cities.
Protesters and members of worker unions gathered in the streets of Lima to demonstrate against President Pedro Castillo’s government and the rising prices.
