Hundreds of Sri Lankans ushered their New Year celebrations at a protest site near the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's office on Thursday.

Protesters took part in a ritual of boiling milk and shared milk rice and oil cakes to celebrate their traditional new year.

They have camped out for a sixth day against the government for the country's economic turmoil.

Sri Lankans in recent months have suffered fuel and food shortages and daily power outages. The government announced Tuesday that it would suspend repayments of foreign debt to conserve foreign reserves for essential food and fuel imports.
