Two separate researches from earlier this year revealed for the first time that microplastics were found in the bloodstream and lungs of living humans. 

While the discovery of microscopic particles inside living organisms does not surprise scientists who've long raised concerns about increased exposure to toxic plastic waste in the environment, further research is now underway to get a better understanding of its full-scale health impacts.
