Hundreds of billions needed to help poor nations with impacts of Russian-Ukraine conflict

Ukraine’s Prime Minister has appealed for billions more in financial aid to help his country withstand Russian attacks. Denys Shmyal was in Washington D.C. to address lawmakers as well as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank – two lenders of last resort.

The U.S. announced an extra $800 million of direct financial aid to Ukraine.

But as Owen Fairclough reports, that’s a fraction of the global total that some of the world’s poorest countries need to withstand the shockwaves created by the conflict.

According to the International Monetary Fund, Ukraine needs at least $5 billion a month just to keep its economy afloat for the next three months.

That amount is dwarfed by the $170 billion the World Bank is attempting to raise to mitigate the impact of the conflict on poorer countries.
