More than 30 Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli security forces at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem on Friday. Israeli police stormed the mosque after Palestinian protestors threw stones and fireworks close to the Western Wall where Jewish worship was taking place, Reuters reports.

The mosque, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount, is a sacred site for both religions.

Protests in solidarity with the Al-Aqsa demonstrators were also held in the northern Gaza Strip, in Amman, Jordan, and in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The recent renewed violence began last week after a series of deadly attacks in Israel and arrest raids in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

After Friday's clashes subsided, more than 150,000 worshippers attend Friday prayers at the mosque.

Visits by Jewish groups to the site have been temporarily halted for the last 10 days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

This year, Ramadan coincided with the week-long Jewish Passover and major Christian holidays. On Friday, Christian worshippers also carried crosses during a Good Friday procession not far from the mosque.
