Shanghai is expected to reopen in early June as China sees a stable decline in infections. Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Qin Gang reassured foreign businesses that China’s opening-up policy towards investment would not change at the Global Economic Summit.

Qin pointed out that the lockdown impacts will be temporary and the foundation of China’s strong market demand remains unchanged.

He said the pandemic was a great challenge for China, causing the Chinese government to take resolute measures. However, Qin explained that the strict policy was not to eliminate the virus but to curb the spreading fast at a minimal cost in a populated country.

There have been practical progress in adjusting pandemic measures. Beijing has opened “fast track lanes” for U.S. entrepreneurs entering China and will add 12 more international flights between China and the U.S., making a total of 30 flights between the two major economies. Some international students will be soon able to return to China to study.
