On his trip to Houston, Texas, the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., Qin Gang, expressed the growing demand from people in southern U.S. to reopen China’s Consulate in Houston.

“They have been angered and saddened by the inconvenience in the past two years,” says Qin.

The Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. said the sudden shutdown of China’s Houston Consulate has seriously harmed the rights of people in southern U.S. to enjoy China’s consular service.

Since Trump administration closed down the consulate, people in southern U.S. have to travel for over 1,000 miles to Washington DC for many consular services.

The Ambassador visited a supermarket and a school in Chinatown, marking the first visit since China’s Houston Consulate shut down in July, 2020.

At a dinner gala hosted marking the Dragon Boat Festival, the Ambassador said the consulate shutdown seriously hurt normal exchanges between China and southern U.S.

He has been warmly received by the overseas Chinese in Houston.

Some overseas Chinese said emotionally to the ambassador that they felt farther away from their home country, after the abrupt consulate shutdown by Trump administration.

Ambassador Qin said the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC will provide service with their best efforts, and he will visit Houston again in the future.
