Biden to visit New Mexico where fire destroyed over 400 homes

U.S. President Biden will visit the state of New Mexico on Saturday.

Biden is expected to face the wrath and expectations of New Mexico residents who lost their homes in a planned federal burn that spread out of control into the largest forest fire in state history, which continues to burn amid hot and dry conditions.

More than 430 homes were lost across 500 square miles since April, when the U.S. Forest Service conducted operations meant to reduce wildfire risks, but instead resulted in the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon fire.

New Mexico is the second-poorest state in the U.S., and many residents in the low income area who lost their homes and belongings live paycheck to paycheck and did not have homeowners insurance.

New Mexico’s Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has asked the federal government to pay for the recovery costs from the fire.
