Following renewed protests on the streets of Ecuador’s capital of Quito on Tuesday, Indigenous leader Leonidas Iza was released from police custody in Latacunga after he was arrested and accused of paralyzing roads during nationwide protests.

Iza, leader of the powerful Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador said after his release: “We maintain the struggle... we simply wish that those whose rights are being violated are also heard.”

Anti-government demonstrations have raged since Monday, with protestors blocking highways and burning tires in a growing movement against skyrocketing fuel prices and the economic and environmental policies of Ecuador’s President Lasso’s administration.
