The presence of microplastics has been an environmental concern for decades. 

Scientists recently discovered them circulating in human blood. In Rio de Janeiro, scientists have found a much higher concentration of microplastics than expected in sea creatures, including those in a protected area off the coast of Brazil's postcard city.
