Chicago police will no longer be allowed to chase people on foot if they've run away after committing minor offenses, the Chicago Police Department announced.

These changes come more than a year after two foot chases ended with officers fatally shooting two young men, NPR reports.

The new policy will state when officers can and cannot chase suspects.

A chase must also be called off if a third party is injured and needs immediate help, officers get lost or lose communication. Officers are also prohibited from provoking chases.
