The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday took the dramatic step of overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that recognized a woman's constitutional right to an abortion and legalized it nationwide, handing a momentous victory to Republicans and religious conservatives who want to limit or ban the procedure.

Many people gathered on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. on Friday, amid the historic ruling by the highest court in the nation to overturn the constitutional right of Americans to obtain safe abortion services.

Emotional reactions were on display as supporters on both sides of the issue cried tears of rage and of joy.  Supporters of a woman’s right to make her own reproductive choices free from government interference appeared horrified and defiant.

Some anti-abortion demonstrators could be seen praising Jesus and blowing bubbles outside the fenced-off Supreme Court building.

Lawmakers on both sides of the issue were out amongst the demonstrators, like U.S. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York and advocate of women’s reproductive health choices, and Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia who celebrated the landmark decision.
