Indian police are calling the killing of a Hindu man in Rajasthan an “act of terror,” as the state remains on high alert amid concerns of religious violence.
Public gatherings have been banned and internet services suspended on Wednesday, a day after two Muslims posted a video saying they were responsible for the brutal murder while holding meat cleavers. The suspects, who allege they were avenging an insult to Prophet Mohammad made by the victim, were being interrogated on Wednesday, as the country reels.
Kanhaiya Lal Teli, a tailor, was slashed in the throat and head while he was taking measurements, a Udaipur city official said. The official said that the victim had been previously detained over a social media post supporting the spokeswoman of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose remarks about the Prophet Mohammad earlier this month triggered domestic and international outrage.
The official said Teli had told the police upon his release that he was being threatened.Police in Rajasthan are under strict orders to prevent any demonstrations scheduled to condemn the murder, amid concerns of violence.
Hundreds attended the last rites of Teli on Wednesday.
