Large volumes of sargassum seaweed are covering Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the country’s main tourist destination.

And the phenomenon ​is directly tied to climate change and human pollution.

Seaweed sits rotting on the beach in huge piles, the sight and smell of it doesn’t only deter tourism.

It also produces hydrogen sulfide as it biodegrades, an acid which is deadly to the local ecosystem.
