Colombia’s Truth Commission was created amid the peace deal between the rebel group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the government in 2016.
In the panel’s final report, released this week, the devastating consequences and abuses that occurred in the 58 years of armed fighting were illustrated, along with recommendations on how Colombia can reform its policies and move forward toward peace.
The original fighting that began between the Marxist rebel group and the Colombian government in 1958 spiraled into a complex armed conflict fueled by the aspirations of many paramilitary groups, the U.S. government, and the illicit drug trade.
