The 4th of July holiday in the U.S. was filled with heartbreak and joy throughout the country. 

At least seven people were killed when a shooter opened fire on paradegoers in Highland Park, near Chicago. 

In New York, people were excited for the return of Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, which saw Joey Chestnut crush the competition. devouring 63 hot dogs in 10 minutes. 

On the National Mall in Washington, D.C., clear skies and no social distancing meant spectators could enjoy the full regalia of fireworks that the nation's capital has to offer.
