Nuns of the Missionaries of Charity, an order founded by Mother Teresa, have been expelled from Nicaragua after the government revoked the legal status of their organization.
A police escort took the nuns to the border with Costa Rica, where they crossed over. Kolkata-based Missionaries for Charity, with over 3,000 nuns doing work worldwide, declined to comment on the expulsion.
A government department that oversees NGOs in Nicaragua said the nuns’ order did not meet its obligations to declare the provenance of its funds, BBC reported.
More than 200 organizations have been shut down as part of what is being reported as a crackdown on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) by allies of President Daniel Ortega, which the opposition claims is an attack on Nicaraguan civil society.
