Sri Lanka's lawmakers have agreed to elect a new president next week, AP News reports.

But they are struggling to decide on the makeup of the nation's new government, including who will take over as prime minister.

Protesters stormed the home and offices of the president and prime minister over the weekend, demanding they resign, which they have agreed to do so.

Sri Lanka has been experiencing severe food, fuel and medicine shortages.

The nation has been relying on aid from neighboring India and China.
