Fourteen Mexican marines died when a navy Blackhawk helicopter went down during the operation to arrest the drug cartel leader Rafael Caro Quintero in Sinaloa on Friday.

The navy says the crash is being investigated but appears to be an accident.

Caro Quintero was the one of the most wanted targets of the FBI and of the  U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) for his alleged responsibility in the murder of a DEA agent over 30 years ago.

Caro Quintero, who was found in the underbrush by a bloodhound, will be extradited to the U.S., Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office said, adding that he would be held at the maximum security prison in Altiplano.

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he lamented the loss of lives and expressed his condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.
