The U.S. economy was plunged into greater uncertainty on Wednesday when new data showed the economy contracted in the first six months of the year.

Back-to-back quarterly contractions is the typical definition of a recession. But like much else in the U.S. even that’s being contested by those who point to strong labor demand and low unemployment.
