Specialists from the National Service of Geology and Mining (Sernageomin) have been sent to the town of Tierra Amarilla, in Copiapo, Chile after a mysterious sinkhole nearly 82 feet in diameter appeared over the weekend.
Aerial images show the scale of the massive hole that developed quickly on land operated by the Canadian mining company Lundin Mining.
“There is a considerable distance, approximately 200 meters (656 feet), to the bottom,” Sernageomin’s director David Montenegro said. “We haven’t detected any material down there, but we have seen the presence of a lot of water.”
