After U.S. Republican lawmakers sparked national outrage last week by blocking in the Senate a $278 billion bill designed to help ailing veterans suffering from exposure to toxic chemicals while serving, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell now says he expects the bill to pass.

Advocates for military veterans, like television host and comedian Jon Stewart, have been gathered and camped on the steps of the U.S. Capitol since Thursday in protest of the Republican opposition to the “Honoring Our Pact Act” or PACT bill.

So what is the “Honoring Our Pact Act” argument all about?

The GOP Senators say their objections to the bill surround elements of accounting that could later increase budget deficits.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Tuesday he expected the Senate to start voting on the veterans health care bill to address toxic exposure at 5 p.m.
