Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s midterm primary revenge tour is out in full force as he seeks to oust congressional Republicans from office who voted to impeach him over the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol last year.
Among Trump's main targets is House Republican lawmaker Liz Cheney from Wyoming, who has become one of his harshest critics.
Cheney, who is the daughter of former-Vice President Dick Cheney, finds herself as the underdog in the race for one of Wyoming’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, despite holding public office since 2016. Cheney, a long-time Republican, previously chaired the prestigious House Republican Conference, which is the third highest position in the party.

However, now she finds herself at odds within the party after she was among ten Republicans who voted to impeach the former President over the Capitol attack on January 6th, 2021.
She has since joined a Democrat-led select House committee to investigate the assault on Capitol by Trump supporters and has played a key role in the ongoing investigation.
This move angered many Republicans, including those within her own state, as the Wyoming Republican Party voted to no longer recognize her membership over her anti-Trump sentiment.
The move also landed her in hot water among fellow Republicans, as they later censured her and a few other party members.
In the 2022 Wyoming primary election for the House seat, Cheney is battling fellow Republican Harriet Hageman, who has been endorsed by former President Trump and appears to have the commanding lead in the race. In fact, a survey conducted by the University of Wyoming between July 25 and August 6 showed that Hageman was favored over Cheney by nearly 30 percent of participants.
Jim King, a professor of Political Science at the University of Wyoming, expanded further Cheney’s prospects, pointing out that her anti-Trump position has sealed her fate, given the fact that the ex-president won the state with 70 percent of the vote in the 2020 presidential election. "All of this plays into the same thing, that 'She hasn't represented us,'" King expressed."
Meanwhile in largest state in the U.S., a major Republican standoff is taking place between two high-profile candidates. Alaska's incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowski is facing a Trump-endorsed candidate. Murkowski will have to defeat fellow Republican Kelly Tshibaka, who is determined to unseat the long-time congresswoman.

Murkowski, who is a moderate, is considered the favorite in the state's primary election and should garner enough votes to move on to the general elections; however, as she advances to the next round, she will face a tighter race and three other candidates vying for her Senate seat.
With Cheney facing defeat, Trump could have his first major victory since he lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden. For Cheney, this would be a devastating loss, as Trump has managed to galvanize other party members and move them under his sphere of influence. In the case of Murkowski, if she is victorious, she will be the last one standing among the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump.
