How will abortion rights impact voters in the U.S. midterm elections?
CGTN America Digital

U.S. abortion rights have become a priority for many voters ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

With the U.S. Supreme Court having overturned the landmark ruling Roe v. Wade, abortion rights are now a state decision. And research shows some states are seeing a rise in new voters and registered Democrats.

Kansas voters recently chose to keep abortion rights, becoming the first state to directly vote on the issue since the high court's decision.

According to the Democratic political data firm Targetsmart, 70% of people who have registered to vote in the state since the court's decision, are women.

Other states that could implement abortion bans such as Michigan and Wisconsin, are also seeing more women than men registering to vote. More voters are also registering as Democrats, research shows.

Since June 24, women have out-registered men by 15.6% in Wisconsin. And with 52.36% of newly-registered voters in the state, Democrats hold the majority so far.

In Michigan, Democrats are out-registering Republicans by 18% and women are out-registering men by 8.1% since the SCOTUS decision.

In contrast, in states where abortion rights are protected by state law, voter motivation among women appears to be lower, according to Targetsmart.

But it's not just voters who are making abortion rights a priority for the midterm election.

Candidates are also spending big dollars on campaign ads, the New York Times reports.

In the weeks following the Supreme Court ruling, Democrats spent nearly eight times as much as Republicans on ads discussing abortion, according to the media tracking firm AdImpact.

The pro-choice organization Planned Parenthood is also contributing money toward the 2022 midterm elections. The organization has funded $50 million to help elect pro-choice candidates.

Senior White House officials and top Democratic strategists think the changes in abortion rights have reawakened the party's progressive base and could encourage independents and Republicans to vote Democratic.

Experts say Michigan is shaping up to be another battleground state over the abortion issue, The Washington Post reports.

It's also likely to appear on ballots in California, Vermont and Montana in November.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden signed an executive order to help ensure abortion access for women who will need to travel out of state for the procedure, and that health care providers follow federal law.

However, experts caution it's still too early to predict how women will vote on abortion rights and whether it will remain a priority issue for voters.
