Vancouver is ranked as one of the most sustainable cities in the world. A big reason why is the city's progressively and environmentally-minded population as well as the way it's governed.  

Vancouver is a charter city which means it can initiate policies on its own that other cities in the province can't. 

That allows it to "push the envelope" and come up with new, inventive initiatives on sustainability that later serve as a model for other cities in Canada and around the world.
