Fuel terminal in Port-au-Prince blockaded amid rising fuel prices

Gangs in Haiti are reported to be responsible for blockading a principal fuel terminal in Port-au-Prince which has halted day-to-day activities, and threatens to force hospitals that rely on diesel generators to close.

Haiti announced steep increases in fuel prices earlier this month, unleashing protests throughout a country already teetering on the edge.  Crime and inflation in Haiti have surged to their highest point in a decade.

People in Port-au-Prince have dug trenches and wedged shipping containers at the entrance to the Varreux terminal for fuel distribution, and the actions reported to be gang-related.

Electricity supply from Haiti’s grid is so unsteady that most businesses and offices cannot maintain operations without power provided by diesel generators.
