Hurricane Ian recovery could bankrupt some Floridians

Experts say the recovery from Hurricane Ian is expected to financially ruin many people in Florida who don't have flood insurance for their homes or properties, POLITICO reports.

Ian swept across across the state, bringing a storm surge to coastal areas, and triggering river overflows in inland areas.

U.S. President Joe Biden declared nine counties disaster areas, making residents eligible for federal aid to help with recovery.

Only 29% of the 1.8 million households in those counties, have federal flood insurance.

Flood insurance is bought separately since it's not included in homeowners' insurance policies.

The majority of U.S. flood coverage is federal and it is unclear how many people have private flood insurance.

The Insurance Information Institute, an industry-funded research group, estimates Ian has caused at least $30 billion in damage.
