Colombia’s cocaine production at record high

Potential cocaine production in Colombia and the region where coca, the drug's primary constituent, is grown increased last year to their highest levels in two decades of monitoring, reported the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on Thursday.
Colombia is still the world's top producer of cocaine after decades of anti-drug initiatives, and its government is constantly under pressure from a key partner, the United States, to lower production.

New leftist President Gustavo Petro, who has called the war on drugs "irrational," has proposed regulating narcotics, expanding voluntary crop substitution programs, focusing enforcement on drug gang leadership and increasing social funding in production areas.
