Iranian security forces opened fire at people who gathered at a cemetery in Mahsa Amini’s home town of Saqez on Wednesday, according to witness reports.
Iran’s ISNA news agency said the internet has been cut off in Saqez. There are reports that many have been arrested.
It’s been 40 days since the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran’s morality police custody, and protests continue in Iranian cities against the country’s treatment of women.
Large numbers of people were filmed on Wednesday walking down a highway to the Aychi Cemetery where Amini is buried in north-western Iran, some chanting “women, life, freedom.”
Iranian students also protested at multiple universities on Wednesday, some were filmed changing “Death to this velayat, all these years of crime”. Velayat-e faqih is said to be a Shia Islamist system of governance that justifies the rule of the clergy over the state.
Iran’s ISNA news agency confirmed clashes took place on Wednesday between security forces and people taking part in a memorial ceremony for Mahsa Amini in her Kurdistan province hometown of Saqez.
