Binational project brings traditional Chinese culture with help of Chinese embassy

U.S. students are helping bridge bilateral relations between the U.S. and China through rural, traditional Chinese construction.

"We truly believe this unique farmhouse will become a museum to exhibit traditional Chinese architecture, a place to experience the Chinese culture, and a bridge to connect American and Chinese people", said the Counsellor of Education of the Chinese Embassy Zhang Yun, in remarks during  a reunion for the China Folk House Retreat.

Called the China Folk House Retreat, in this bicultural educational program students are re-building a traditional home from Yunnan Province and other structures, using Chinese architectural methods and environmentally friendly materials. The Retreat aims to be an educational gathering space for students to learn and share knowledge related to Chinese culture.

Those who are helping build the home and surrounding structures, participated in a virtual and in-person reunion, discussing the goals and progress of the project.

Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., Qin Gang, also helped the students complete the frame to the dormitory of their compound.

Counsellor Zhang noted the Ambassador and the Embassy are impressed by the ingenuity of the project and touched by those involved in learning Chinese folk culture.

The project has become a 'shared vision' for the leaders behind it and the Chinese Embassy, Counsellor Zhang said. He also noted how Ambassador Qin helped the project when they encountered difficulties with construction.

The embassy helped the builders get more tiles and craftsmen in Chinese architecture, and aims to continue supporting the rebuild of the home and its cultural activities in the future.

"We hope that more Chinese and American students can learn together, can grow up together, can become important partners for their future career, and make greater contributions to the promotion of bilateral relations", said Counsellor Zhang.

Construction at the site is ongoing as students, professors, and professional builders work together to complete the compound. But some cultural and educational activities have already taken place, with more expected in the coming years.
