Final voting began on Tuesday in the U.S. without any major issues as the U.S. midterm elections kick off under intense scrutiny. Two years of false claims and conspiracy theories about how ballots are cast and counted have some voters feeling uneasy. 

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it would send election monitors to 64 jurisdictions within 24 states.

Election monitors have been deployed during elections over the last 50 years, they are not new.Some Americans still believe the so-called “the big lie,” or the false notion that the 2020 election was ‘stolen’ from former U.S. president Donald Trump.

Some Americans are concerned over the potential of voter suppression.In some counties concerns over voter intimidation have been raised, with reports of armed people at the polling stations.

The monitors stay in touch with election officials and watch for any sign of disruption in the voting process.Election monitors are there to enforce the Voting Rights Act, the National Voter Registration Act and other statutes related to voting.

On Monday, Florida officials told the DOJ that federal election monitors would be barred from polling places under state law.

A Cole County election official in Missouri also said he won’t allow federal monitors to enter polling places in his county, citing state law that only voters and poll workers can be at the locations, despite complaints of lack of accessible voting machines in previous elections.
