Indian minister's comments spark outrage amid Walkar murder case

If the murder case of Shradda Walkar wasn’t already gruesome enough, Indian federal minister Kaushal Kishore has made comments that many following the case have found sickening.

The details of Ms. Walkar’s May 18 murder were released this week, and include her strangling and dismemberment allegedly at the hand of her boyfriend  Aaftab Amin Poonawala, who is also accused of sprinkling her body parts in the forest over time to avoid detection by authorities.

Union Minister Kishore claimed Walkar’s murder by the boyfriend she lived with was a crime that could occur because of ‘mistakes’ made by ‘educated women.’

Poonwala, who is now in custody and charged with murder, met Walkar on the dating app Bumble before the couple made the decision to move in together, something that many traditional Indians still frown upon.

Kishore sparked outrage by saying that live-in relationships give rise to such crimes, and that women “are the ones who get stuck in such situations,” on a television interview.

“If you really fall in love with someone, get married first. What’s this live-in relationship? Such methods are encouraging crimes,” Kishore said.

The comments struck a tone of victim-blaming that did not sit well with a large part of the Indian population amid a recent onslaught of horrific crimes against women.
