In a mountain gorge on the outskirts of Guatemala City flows a questionable landmark – known across Central America as ‘Trash River’.
A recent video of the Rio Motagua shows a dystopian landscape — the sound of piles of plastic garbage crashing against each other, loudly crinkling as the wind blows over the severely polluted river.
CGTN’s Alasdair Baverstock reports from the river where solutions are few.
Plastic makes up 80 percent of all the pollution littering the world’s oceans, according to the United Nations, with as much as 10 million tons entering the seas on a global scale annually.
