The U.S. State of California has been at the forefront of the fight against climate change; however, it continues to battle increasingly devastating wildfires year in, year out.

A recent report by U.S. scientists revealed California's 2020 wildfire season was the most destructive on record and caused 127 million metric tons of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere.

That is nearly twice the amount of carbon emission cuts that were achieved between 2003 to 2019.

The discovery challenges authorities to consider wildfires emissions when assessing progress toward greenhouse gas targets.
