Peruvian Perla Gavidia and her children won the first prize in the draw of Spain’s traditional Christmas lottery “El Gordo” on Thursday. For the multiple winners of the world’s richest lottery, this holiday season will be especially memorable, and even extra 'fat'.
El Gordo, or ‘The Fat One’ is the world’s richest lottery draw, held in Madrid near Christmas every year for elated Spaniards, many who have implemented ticket giving into their holiday traditions. This year the prize money was 2.5 billion euros ($2.65 billion).

People all around Madrid celebrated the wins of others. The Spanish lottery has been around since 1812, with roots tracing back all the way to the reign of King Carlos III when the drawing was created as a charity event in 1763.
Even the kiosk owners where the winning ticket was sold could be seen celebrating with wine in the streets on Thursday after the numbers were announced.
