'Please don't shoot me dead,' Memphians protest

See the peaceful protests that took place in Memphis, Tennessee a day after police released video footage of the beating of Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop. Nichols, 29, died just days later. The give Black Memphis police officers were fired after an internal investigation found them "directly responsible" for the beating and have been charged in his death.

Just hours after the video was released on the evening of Friday Jan. 27 protestors blocked traffic on Interstate 55 in Memphis.

In addition to protests in Memphis, thousands of others protested across the United States.

In New York, protestors gathered in Times Square, one protestor stomped on a police car, breaking the windshield. He was detained by police. In Los Angeles, protestors gathered outside LAPD headquarters and faced off with officers, while in the U.S. capital city, people protested near the White House.

Following the release of the video, the police department permanently deactivated its SCORPION unit, which was the same unit that the five officers were a part of.
