Onion prices in the Philippines are now among the highest in the world after a shortage in supplies.
At the end of last year, prices in Manila were 10 times higher than they were eight months ago, to about $37 a kilogram.
This led authorities to clear the emergency import of more than 21,000 tones of onions earlier this year.
Some believe that middlemen hoarding onions exacerbated the crisis. But critics say that the government’s long-term mismanagement of the Philippine agricultural sector has contributed to the crisis.
The government said it was aware of its shortcomings in addressing food security. And said that the reform and restructuring of the Department of Agriculture will come. Meanwhile, some communities are finding their own solutions.
