U.S. EPA deems air and water safe in Ohio town after derailment

Air monitoring devices were seen fixed to utility poles in East Palestine, Ohio this week as clean-up crews worked alongside the stream near the site of the Norfolk Southern Railways train derailment that spilled toxic chemicals into the small town of about 4,800 people.

Officials quickly burned the chemicals, creating a fiery mass that reached the clouds, rather than risk allowing a toxic mix to seep into the waterways. Residents of the small town reported burning eyes, sick pets and dead fish after the February 3 derailment.Water was pumped into a creek for aeration on Thursday, as the increasingly alarmed residents waited to collect $1000 reimbursement checks for their evacuation expenses.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was in East Palestine on Thursday, and assessed that the ‘air is safe to breathe and the water is safe to drink.’

Those with private wells should continue to use bottled water until that water can be tested, the EPA said.“EPA has assisted with the screening of more than 480 homes under the voluntary screening program offered to residents and no detections of vinyl chloride or hydrogen chloride were identified,” U.S. EPA Chief Administrator Michael Regan said Thursday.

Another Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous materials derailed in the U.S. state of Michigan on Thursday.
