On February 18, 2023 local time, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, met with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles while attending the Munich Security Conference.
Wang Yi expressed that China and the EU are partners rather than rivals, and the consensus far outweighs the differences. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the EU. The two sides should adhere to the positioning of the partnership, respect each other's core interests, cherish the fruits of cooperation, and open up a better next 20 years.
The two sides can actively prepare for a new China-EU leaders' meeting, make full use of high-level dialogue mechanisms in various fields, and promote bilateral exchanges to return to pre-epidemic levels as soon as possible. The two sides should maintain open cooperation, refuse to decouple and disconnect, and jointly maintain the stability of the global production and supply chain.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles said that the European side has been promoting the development of EU-China relations with a mature and candid attitude. The EU unswervingly pursues the one-China policy.
The EU hopes to strengthen high-level exchanges with China and promote cooperation in various fields, which is beneficial to Europe, China and the world. The EU side is willing to work with the Chinese side to make good preparations for the next EU-China leaders' meeting and exchange views in depth on issues of common concern.
When talking about the Ukrainian crisis, Wang Yi emphasized that China insists on promoting peace and talks, and is willing to strengthen communication with the European side and persevere in finding a way for a political solution. Facing a world of intertwined events, China and the EU should strengthen cooperation to inject more stability into the world.
