New rules potentially affecting tens of thousands of migrants arriving to the Mexico-U.S. border seeking asylum were proposed on Tuesday by the Biden administration. Take a look at what could change.

The Biden administration proposed a new set a of rules for migrants seeking asylum in the U.S., in an attempt to cut down on illegal border crossings. Migrants must make an appointment at a U.S. border port to be eligible for asylum under the proposed rules.

Certain nationalities will also be permitted to use humanitarian programs open to them to seek asylum. The proposed rules would mandate that migrants first seek and be denied protection in countries they pass through in order to seek asylum in the U.S.The proposed rules, posted online on February 21, will be subject to 30 days of public commentary before being reviewed for final publication.

Department of Homeland Security say the measures would be temporary pending larger congressional action, and deny that the rules fall under ‘transit bans.’ Unaccompanied minors would be exempt from the rules.

Families and single adults would be subject to the restrictions. 

Critics says the rules are ’Trump-like,” and “un-American.  The American Civil Liberties Union has already promised to fight the measures in court.
